With drought conditions more prevalent each year, why not learn how to harvest food and medicine from the wild responsibly, or at least grow it in a perennial form that requires very little water, and comes back each year. Your food sources can be nutritious, beautiful, and very little work. We will also look at how to use the plants that already grow in your own backyard or alley!
This course will include:
- A botany and wildcrafting primer: Learn how to identify plants, recognize plant families, and respectfully harvest plant parts. We will learn their growth habits, and where they can be found, as well as how to identify dangerous lookalikes.
- Overview of edible and medicinal plants that grow well in a USDA Zone 3 climate. Did you know that there are over a dozen edible or medicinal plants found in the average yard in Regina? Did you know you can grow apricots and goji berries here? That’s only the tip of the iceberg!
- In-depth study of 10 useful and resilient plants; and how to grow, harvest, and propagate them.
- Permaculture planting techniques for optimal success including: the building of a food forest, passive watering techniques, and companion planting for pest control and optimal growth.
This course is an in-depth look at the plants briefly covered in my plant walks and foraging tours, as well as an extensive guide to growing unique edible perennials on the prairies. We will cover how to save seeds, and propagate cuttings, where to source plants and how to grow them using permaculture techniques for the best possible outcomes.
At the end of this course, you will be comfortable growing and sourcing many plants for consumption and use, and will have a new appreciation for all that grows in our climate.
This course is hands-on and in person on a farm located 20km northwest of Regina, SK.
